Windows, macOS, iOS and Android all include Japanese voices, though the number and quality vary.
If no Japanese voice appears, check your system language packs or try another browser.
A single conversion accepts 3,000 characters. Japanese is typically read at about 300 to 400 characters per minute, so a full box is roughly eight to ten minutes. Split longer scripts at natural breaks and listen to each part before moving on.
Text to speech sometimes picks the wrong reading for a kanji. If a name or a term sounds off, try writing it in hiragana or katakana for the preview. Use Japanese punctuation such as the full stop and comma so pauses fall where you expect.
Cloud voices are live: they play in the browser and download as MP3, free within the daily limits. The voices of your device also work for listening. A free developer API is available on the developers page, and one-time credit packs are planned, with no date yet (see pricing). Generating Japanese audio on your device is not available.
Learners use it to hear how a sentence is read, creators use it to check a script before recording, and teachers use it to preview material. Because Japanese has no spaces between words, listening is a quick way to find sentences that are hard to parse and should be rewritten more simply.
Device voices differ widely in quality. Try a different Japanese voice in the list, lower the speed slightly and add punctuation to guide the rhythm. Premium device voices, when your system offers them, are usually more natural than the basic default one.
