Intros, outros and ad reads

An intro is usually 20 to 40 seconds, or about 50 to 100 words. Write it, listen to it with two or three voices and choose the one that matches your show. Repeat for the outro and sponsor reads.

Audition the tone

Podcast voices set expectations in the first seconds. Try the same line in a calm voice and a brighter one, and compare how the pacing changes at slower and faster speeds.

Use it for show notes and summaries

Listening to the summary of an episode shows whether it is clear. Paste the episode description and listen for filler words and long sentences.

What you can do today

Cloud voices are live: they play in the browser and download as MP3, free within the daily limits. The voices of your device also work for listening. A free developer API is available on the developers page, and one-time credit packs are planned, with no date yet (see pricing).

Keep intros short and consistent

The best intros state the show name, the topic and one reason to listen in under 30 seconds. Once you pick a voice and speed, keep them for every episode so listeners recognise the show immediately.

Test sponsor reads and calls to action

Ad reads and calls to action are easy to over-write. Paste the text, listen once and cut anything you stumble over. If the line sounds like an advertisement rather than a recommendation, rewrite it in shorter sentences.

Check the intro against your show

Play the intro next to a few seconds of your episode audio. If the pace or tone feels different, adjust the speed, simplify the wording or choose another voice until the first thirty seconds sound like one show. Do this again whenever you change the intro, so the opening never drifts from the rest of the episode.
