Drop a file here, or choose one

PDF, EPUB, TXT, DOCX or Markdown. Up to 50 MB for PDF, 30 MB for EPUB and 10 MB for the others.

Your file is opened in this browser only. It is never uploaded and never stored on our servers. Only the sentences you choose to hear are sent to a cloud voice to be spoken, and nothing is kept. Device voices send nothing at all.

How to have text read aloud

  1. 1

Open a file or paste text. Drop a PDF, EPUB, TXT, DOCX or Markdown file on the reader above, or choose Paste text instead.

  2. 2

Choose where to start. Pick a section from the contents, select a passage, or use Read from here on any paragraph.

  3. 3

Pick a voice and speed. Cloud voices sound natural; device voices are free and unlimited. Set the speed that suits you.

  4. 4

Press play and follow along. The sentence being read is highlighted and the page scrolls with it. Pause or skip a sentence whenever you like.

  5. 5

Save the audio. With a cloud voice, download the selected part as an MP3 or WAV file to listen later.

Files and pasted text

Open PDF files up to 50 MB, EPUB up to 30 MB and TXT, DOCX or Markdown up to 10 MB, or paste text straight into the reader. Files are split by page, chapter or heading so you can jump to the part you want, and the reader shows long text in a comfortable column at a size you can change.

Private by design

Your file is opened in your browser and is never uploaded or stored on our servers. Only the sentences you choose to hear are sent to a cloud voice, and nothing is kept. Device voices send nothing at all.

When listening helps

Hearing a text is a quick way to catch typos and awkward sentences, to get through a long article while you do something else, to check how a script flows before you record or publish, and to make written material easier to follow for people who find reading tiring.

Two kinds of voices

Cloud voices sound natural and cover English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean; they count against 10,000 free characters a day without an account and 30,000 when you are signed in. Voices from your device are free, unlimited and work offline, and they differ between Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

Longer texts

Sentences are sent one after another and the next few are prepared while you listen, so you are not held to 3,000 characters at a time. When your selection is more than the free characters you have left, the reader tells you and lets you continue with a device voice for free.
