VoiceHue lets you listen to a chapter section for free in your browser: paste up to 3,000 characters, which is about 500 words or three minutes, choose a voice and press play. It does not need an account.
Free text to speech: paste up to 3,000 characters, pick a voice and listen in your browser. The voices load in a moment.
A chapter of 3,000 words equals about six sections. Convert them in order and keep the voice and speed the same so the listening experience stays consistent. Split at paragraph or scene breaks rather than mid-sentence.
For long listening, pick a steady voice and a slightly slower speed. Try a dialogue-heavy passage and a descriptive one with the same voice; if both sound natural, it will carry the book.
Authors use text to speech to catch repeated words, long sentences and missing punctuation. Listen to a chapter section, mark where you hesitate and fix those lines.
Cloud voices are live: they play in the browser and download as MP3, free within the daily limits. The voices of your device also work for listening. A free developer API is available on the developers page, and one-time credit packs are planned, with no date yet (see pricing). Full audiobook export in one step is not available, so convert chapter by chapter.
Nonfiction, essays, articles and study notes work best, because they have a steady register. Fiction with a lot of dialogue benefits from short passages so you can check that each line reads naturally. Remove page numbers and footnote markers before pasting.
English, Spanish, Portuguese and French can be generated on your device, so a chapter can be listened to without leaning on a cloud service. Chinese and Japanese use the voices your browser provides, which is fine for checking text but varies by device.
Use a slightly slower speed for dense text and the normal speed for light reading. Take a break between sections, because the voice stays constant even when your attention does not, and keep a note of where you stopped.
Not in one step. Each conversion is limited to 3,000 characters, so convert the book in parts and download each part as MP3 from a cloud voice.
