What "no sign-up" means here

There is no account, no email address and no payment step between you and the audio. You open the page, paste text and listen. The limits are the size of the text box, 3,000 characters per conversion, and for cloud voices a daily allowance of 2,000 characters without an account (20,000 when you are signed in). If your text is longer, split it at a paragraph break and convert the parts one after another; the same limit applies to each part. There is no trial period to run out, because there is nothing to unlock: you can use the tool once to check a paragraph or every day to proofread, and it behaves the same way.

How to use it in four steps

First, paste or type your text, or load one of the example scenes to see how it works. Second, choose the language and a voice from the list. Third, press Convert or play and listen. Fourth, adjust the speed under Advanced settings, edit the text where it sounds awkward and listen again. Use Insert pause where you want a longer break. Nothing needs to be installed, so this also works on a shared, school or work computer. On a phone the voice list opens as a menu; tap the text box, paste, then tap Convert. If nothing plays, check that the device is not on silent and that the browser tab is allowed to play sound.

Three kinds of voices, all free

Browser voices are the ones your device and browser already have. They start instantly, but the list differs between Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and they are for listening only. On-device voices are generated in your browser for English, Spanish, Portuguese and French: the browser downloads the voice once, the first run takes a little longer, and the finished audio can be saved as a WAV file with the Download WAV button. Cloud voices are generated on our servers for English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean and download as MP3. To compare, play the same paragraph with a browser voice and with a cloud or on-device voice; the difference shows which one suits your use.

What you can do today

Cloud voices are live: they play in the browser and download as MP3, free within the daily limits. The voices of your device also work for listening. A free developer API is available on the developers page, and one-time credit packs are planned, with no date yet (see pricing). Background music mixing is not available, so add music in your video editor.

Tips for a clean read

Put commas where you want a short pause and full stops where you want a longer one. Write numbers the way you want them spoken, spell out an abbreviation the first time it appears, and break very long sentences in two. If a name is mispronounced, try a phonetic respelling in the preview text only and keep the correct spelling in your final copy. For a long article, convert one section at a time: you hear problems earlier, and a single typo does not cost you a full three-minute conversion. Remove menus, ad blocks and image captions from text pasted from a web page so the voice reads only the content you care about.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free, with no sign-up?

Yes. The text to speech tool is free, needs no account or login and does not ask for a credit card. You only need a browser.

Do I need an account to download the audio?

No. Pick a cloud voice, press Convert and download the MP3, or pick a voice marked WAV and press Download WAV. Browser voices are listen-only and cannot be saved.

How much text can I convert at once?

Up to 3,000 characters, which is about 500 English words or three minutes of speech. For longer texts, convert them in parts.

Which languages work?

Cloud voices cover English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean. English, Spanish, Portuguese and French can also be generated on your device, and other languages play with the voices your browser provides.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It runs in the browser on iPhone, Android, Windows and macOS. The voices you see depend on your device.
