One lesson, one script

Short lessons of two to five minutes fit one or two conversions. Keep one idea per lesson, write in the second person and give each script a clear opening sentence that says what the learner will be able to do.

Keep the voice consistent

Choose one voice and one speed for the whole course and note them in your production checklist. Consistency matters more than the particular voice, because learners notice changes between lessons.

Terms and numbers

Course scripts contain names, units and abbreviations. Listen for the ones the voice mispronounces and test a spelled-out version. Keep a short glossary of the respellings that work.

What you can do today

Cloud voices are live: they play in the browser and download as MP3, free within the daily limits. The voices of your device also work for listening. A free developer API is available on the developers page, and one-time credit packs are planned, with no date yet (see pricing).

Make lessons easy to follow by ear

Learners cannot re-read a sentence in audio, so lead with the main point, repeat key terms rather than using synonyms, and keep each lesson to one idea. Listening to your own script through a voice is the quickest way to find the sentences that need simplifying.

Plan for translation

If you teach in several languages, write the script natively for each one and keep a table of terms. Preview each translation with a voice for that language, because phrasing that works in English can be awkward when read aloud in Spanish or Portuguese.

Check before you publish

Listen to each lesson script once from start to finish before you record or publish it. Note the lines where you would pause, simplify or add an example, and update the script so the final lesson sounds natural.
